The Swamp's Teeth

Sablemere does not trust stone walls. It trusts mud that swallows, reeds that hide, and water that never reveals its full depth. The Enclave’s first and fiercest defenses are the swamp’s own teeth: sudden sinkholes, shifting channels, drowned roots, and fog thick enough to swallow sound. Those who march in with tight ranks and loud banners quickly find themselves split, slowed, and bled by a landscape that does not care how important they felt on dry ground.

The Scaleguard, Sablemere’s wardens and warriors, learn to move where others flounder. They mark safe paths only in ways their own can read, using patterns of broken reeds, subtly altered stones, or scars on trees that blend with natural growth. Ambush is not considered dishonorable—only wasteful violence is. Better to strike once from hiding, let the swamp finish what was started, and vanish with the receding mist.

In times of true threat, the Tidecouncil may call for the Raising of the Teeth, a coordinated effort to flood certain routes, collapse makeshift causeways, and drive predators into an invader’s path. Outsiders sometimes speak of Sablemere as if it were a single, lurking beast. The Enclave does not mind this misunderstanding. If others fear the swamp itself, they are less likely to test just how many jaws it can truly bite with.
